The “I am a Roma Woman” regional campaign is presented today, Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the House of Human Rights in Sarajevo, on the occasion of the International Day of the Roma. Sumka Bučan, Director of CARE International NWB Sarajevo, Indira Bajramović, President of Roma Association „Bolja Budućnost“ (Better Future) from Tuzla, Nedžad Jusić, President of Roma Association Eurorom from Tuzla, and Jadranka Miličević, Project Coordinator with CARE International NWB, will talk about the project.
The campaign is one of the activities under the “Empowerment of Roma Women” three-year regional project, implemented by CARE International NWB within the Roma Inclusion Decade 2005-2015, in partnership with Roma women NGOs: „Bolja budućnost“-Tuzla (BiH); „Centar za romske inicijative“ (Centre for Roma Initiatives) – Nikšić (Montenegro); „Romski ženski centar-Bibija“ (Roma Women Centre Bibija) – Belgrade (Serbia); „Romsko srce“ (Roma Heart) – Jagodnjak (Baranja, Hrvatska).
CARE International NWB wants to contribute to the marking of International Day of the Roma through this campaign that aims to empower Roma women and raise public awareness about their status in society.
A video was produced for the campaign, presenting four Roma Women – from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia – who point out the prejudice and discrimination they face daily, as well as the need for education and employment for Roma, especially Roma women.
At the same time, those women are examples that intend to present the viewers with a new, positive depiction of Roma women and Roma population in general, and to offer hope and motivation for studying and advancement. All women in the video are activists and act through to improve the status of Roma women in society and their community through the work in their respective NGOs.
The campaign, produced by Romedia Foundation from Budapest, will be implemented between April 8 and May 14, 2010. On May 14, 2010, CARE International NWB and its partners will organize a regional conference in Belgrade: The Role and Participation of Roma Women in implementation of National Action Plans for the Roma Inclusion Decade.
The project is financially supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
